Leaving the United States wasn’t just a move—it was a leap of faith. I traded the familiar comforts of home for the unknown beauty of the Philippines, chasing a life that felt more meaningful, more alive. I craved more than routine. I wanted warmth—not just in the air, but in the people, the culture, the everyday moments.
Becoming an expat wasn’t about escape; it was about awakening. The Philippines called to something deep in my soul—a desire for simplicity, for adventure, for connection. And when I arrived, it didn’t feel foreign. It felt right.
Here, life flows more slowly, but richer. Days are filled with ocean breezes, open smiles, and a kind of peace I never knew I was missing. It’s not always easy, but it’s real. And in every challenge, I’ve found growth. Every sunrise is a reminder that I made the right choice.
This is more than a move. This is the start of becoming who I was always meant to be.
Technically, I’m still considered a tourist until my ACR card arrives. The process will take a few months while I wait for my SRRV approval—but I’m embracing the journey in the meantime. If you asked me what’s been the hardest thing to adjust to, I’d say the weather. On the flip side, the best surprise has been the food. Even the simplest dishes taste completely different from what you find in the States, and I’ve enjoyed trying everything my new friends have introduced me to.
The most unusual so far? Bagoong—fermented fish, krill, and salt. It may not look appealing, but when I asked for seconds, I earned some serious credibility points. Despite all the eating, my weight hasn’t budged (if anything, I might have even lost a few pounds).
All in all, I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a welcoming and vibrant community.
