I believe we all understand that at some point in our lives, we will face grief. I didn’t expect my experience to unfold as it did. I navigated the heart-wrenching waves of loss—first losing my son, and then my nephew. Both were very young and left this world far too soon. Along with these losses, I also endured a divorce that felt like a complete unraveling of my identity. When I retired, I was naïve enough to think I had everything figured out. However, life has a way of grounding us in reality. This has been a lesson learned, and it is my hope that this post encourages someone to develop a contingency plan.
My son, Antonio (Tony), was here one day and gone the next. He left this world without warning at the age of 33 on January 11, 2020. The cause of his passing was natural but unknown. I was devastated, and the uncertainty surrounding his death only intensified the pain. Although it has been over five years since then, the hurt still lingers. However, I know that Tony would want me to live the rest of my life to the fullest. Not long after losing Tony, his cousin also passed away. Both young men were exceptional individuals, and they are missed more than words can express.
This will be the last time I speak about my divorce. After 28 years, my marriage fell apart. Who is to blame is irrelevant; the fact is that my life was completely devastated—at least, that’s what I thought at the time.
Working through my divorce has provided me with the opportunity and determination to experience the most personal growth I’ve ever encountered. I have found God, discovered peace, and started to believe that “good guys do finish first.” Although the struggle has been painful, I am now ready to move on and continue my journey. I am very excited about my future and the next chapter of my life.
